Valentine’s Day weekend is upon us! I hope you’re spending time with your loved ones this weekend. I’ll be meeting up on Sunday with some of my favorite ladies for an all-day Galentine’s celebration with brunch, movies and board games. Check out what I’m loving this weekend!
Gochujang Hot Pepper Paste
This spicy Korean condiment is made from dried, fermented Korean hot peppers. It’s spicy, savory and loaded with umami. Think of it as the chipotle pepper of 2016. You can mix with soy sauce, vinegar and brown sugar to make a delicious Asian dipping sauce, or stir into into soups, stews, sauces or stir fries. As I write this, I have a fragrant gochujang-infused vegetable soup simmering away on the stove. Find gochujang at your local Asian market or on Amazon.
The Bitter Truth Pimento Dram
The weather in Nebraska was sheer misery this week: blustery winds, frigid temperatures and grey, cloudy skies. On Thursday, I met up with my friend Courtney for a hot toddy at one of our favorite cocktail joints, The White Rabbit. In addition to the traditional bourbon and lemon, the White Rabbit adds a splash of this allspice- and clove-infused liqueur to their toddies. It adds a layer of heady holiday spice that warms you at the core. The lovely bartendress allowed us to sample the Pimento Dram on its own, and I’d love to try it in a negroni variation with Campari and gin. I don’t know where to buy this in Nebraska, but I’ll be keeping my eye out for it.
Last week I spent an hour locked inside one of Lincoln’s new escape rooms, Escape Lincoln, with my mother. We had to work together to retrieve a flash drive with a secret code that would get us out of the locked room. We needed a few clues along the way, but we managed to escape with 7 minutes left on the clock. If your city has a local escape room, they’re an awesome way to spend an hour with your family, friends or loved ones. I’d love to try it again with a larger group.
Sometimes even food bloggers get the blues. Blue Apron is a weekly meal delivery service that delivers three unique meals to your door every week. They provide all of the ingredients and detailed preparation instructions. I’m on my second week of Blue Apron and have been enjoying the diverse, flavorful recipes. My favorite dish so far was Steak Tacos with Mole Verde and Avocado. This week, the menu includes Mexican-spiced salmon and lamb- and beef-stuffed pita sandwiches. The service is a little pricy and takes away the creativity of planning my own weekly meals, but it’s great when I’m stressed and busy.
Grimes – Art Angels
On her fourth album, this Canadian auteur creates dark, danceable pop. The music is bright, anxious and addictive. This is by far my favorite album of 2016, though it was technically released in December 2015. Grimes is no Taylor Swift, and her videos are weird and dark. Check out Kill V. Main and Flesh Without Blood, available now on Art Angels.
Sweary Coloring Book: The Adult Coloring Book with Filthy Swears and Cute Kittens
I’ve fully jumped on the adult coloring bandwagon and have been meeting my friends on the weekends to color our woes away. I picked up this coloring book as a Christmas gift for a friend and love it. I plan on getting my own copy soon. There’s something just so emotionally satisfying about coloring filthy words with friends. Pick up the Sweary Coloring Book on Amazon.
What are you loving this week? Have you done any adult coloring?
